I survived another day! Halleluyah!!

You guys tend to be from some of my closer circle of relationships and friends. So i, being who have built myself into being, am rather blunt. I will be blunt in todays posting. If you are easily offended in behalf of other people you dont really know, i apoligize ahead of time.

Blunt Moment:

Never gonna return to peru - ever.

Peru is full of some absolutely amazing people. They have been flung into the 20th century (yes, 20th) without the background that the europeans and americans had. In America, we were already establishing some level of self control of the riches and leasures that our history has had to offer, by the time the Automobile came into existance.

 - Peru (Day Two)
by Mortur 7:30 AM 10/29/2006

Whew, yesterday was quite busy. Busier then i thought it would be, and i thought it would be busy to begin with. In the good news department, I have been able to successfully avoid drinking any tap water, so far. And I am still feeling good (maybe a bit Dr. Pepper deprived, but nothing that isnt short-term).

The main itinerary yesterday, was to get some grocery shopping completed, and to visit with the photo restoration labs that my company employes. Our host arrived at 10 our time, and took us to El Supermercado thats right across the way - maybe a quarter mile walk from door to door.

It was interesting to see how colorful Peru is - as the building was ramshackled by the 3 primary colors on every pane of expose building. But they probibly do that to ensure that it is a family-safe location. Most buildings here in Peru are in pretty run-down state. Most are nothing that couldnt be fixed with some caring and a coat of paint. Some are beyond repair, but are not being demolished for some reason or another.

 - Peru (Day One)
by Mortur 7:48 AM 10/28/2006

As most of you know, I have taken a business trip to Peru. My expertiese in setting up computers, and my position at work in building and developing user interfaces for the labs and artists down here in Peru have put me in the position of sitting on the bottom bunk in a very small office.

Yesterday, we flew out of SLC to catch our 8:05 flight to Atlanta. Day started at 4:30, and went smoothly getting on the plane. Russ (my co-worker and translator for the trip) and I sat very close (were both really big guys) towards the back of that plane. Smooth trip, with a rough landing in a stormy Georgia.

 - Late Night Posting
by Mortur 10:34 PM 10/18/2006

Its 9:50, as I start this post. It took me a good 2 hours to get Office re-installed (I am using and reporting issues on the Beta version of the software). I recently re-installed my Operating System, and hadn’t bothered to get office re-installed. My spelling and punctuation skills are rather fairly poor, so I have to use Word’s spell-check in order to make myself seem somewhat intelligent.

But since I am almost ready for bed, and I have taken the time to actually get everything setup, I am going to post anyways – and shove this down your collective throats. Even if it doesn’t make sense at all. Instead of finishing my OSS article (part 2), I will do something else requiring a bit less research.

The topic of choice: all of the petty little definitions I have been arguing with my co-workers about over the past week.

 - Love VS. Love
by Mortur 9:19 PM 10/10/2006

I hate talking about myself. I really do. But often to help engage others into the conversation, I have to resort to tactics such as giving stories about myself to help them empathize (there is an entire color in the Personality Profile I have mentioned in previous articles – devoted to understanding people through personal events and sharing of feelings). Sometimes, it’s just a great way to dive into a subject with the least amount of pre-explanation. So bear with me if I seem vague or trying to finish it too quickly.

Having grown up and involving myself in various media that the late 80’s and 90’s had to offer, I gathered a glimpse of the world around me from the comfort (or lack thereof) of my own home. One of those things is the ideas of Romance, and Love. Portrayed often through TV, Books, and Video Games, it is one of the core reasons that people struggle to continue on even with insurmountable odds against them. It is often given as the inner strength within us all.

But just as often, it is portrayed in such ways that are completely incorrect, in my opinion. These same Medias often confused Love with other emotions such as Lust, or Loneliness. You watch Soap Operas, where everyone is cheating on everyone else. Each one claim it was for True Love, when in fact, it was nothing more then Lust that was showing. Teenagers often confuse Loneliness or Lust for Love as well. But, what is the real difference between these emotions?

 - Delta Age (Difference of Age)
by Mortur 10:14 PM 10/9/2006

As some of you may know, there are some interesting events occurring right now in my family. This is something I want to see how I really feel about it. So I am going to give it a try here on my blog. I find that things that I blog about, I gain an even greater understanding for myself - as I am trying to argue both sides in my mind as I write. But this one in particular, is the difference of ages in relationships.

I have only one sister. She is someone that I have never really had a very close relationship with, due to many circumstances throughout our childhoods. We constantly bickered, and fought one another to try to stand on top of each other to exert our own sense of what was right and wrong. Myself being the oldest and being 1 of 4 boys, generally pushed for myself and the guys. She, being the only girl, fought for her own rights as having an equal stance even though in the minority. These battles came out in what was watched on TV, what activities we participated in, and just every day living under one roof.

When she was doing much of her maturing, I was gone away on a mission, being laid up after surgery, and then being away at college. So we never really got close. But the simple fact remained; I still loved her as much as any of my siblings - even though I was largely unable to show it.

 - OSS - Part 1
by Mortur 8:44 PM 10/3/2006

To get something for nothing is wonderful, isn’t it? To obtain without the requirement to give ends in a “Net Gain”, as economy would go. So - its financially smart for a company to utilize as much cost-free materials as possible, and paying a bit extra for nicer things that can never be obtained without cost.

Open Source Software (OSS for short), is just such a thing. OSS software can be easily found all over the internet. Developers build these software applications, with grants from large companies, and then release them to the public. Where this is different then Freeware, is that not only is the software release, but so is the source code that a computer reads to determine what the program is supposed to do. So now, companies and individuals can take that source code, and get the software that someone else wrote and make it do what they want in their own applications.

OSS is touted as the “wave of the future of programming”. Software suddenly becomes accessible to everyone around the world, not just to those who have the spare change to buy the expensive software – and things become license free, so only one download is needed. However, I completely disagree with this assessment.

 - The Turing Test
by Mortur 9:47 PM 10/2/2006

Surfing around the internet the other day, I stumbled upon a posting from someone who was genuinely fooled by a video on YouTube, about a robot called Quasi. Quasi seems, in the video, to be able to respond quite effectively to the people’s voices who are standing in front of them, even though there is a ton of background noise. Due to the fact that the article was geared around the idea that it was the actual thing, my mind was set to see if I could believe it myself.

However, the machine was too quick. It was able to silence out the crowd, understand verbal input, and respond eerily the way a human would. Immediately, my warning lights went off in my head, so I did some more research into this Quasi Quandry. It turns out Quasi isn’t so spectacular, just an anamatronic puppet.

But what does a person listen to when they are trying to determine if an AI vocabulary and communication accurately simulates a human’s speech? There is actually a test for this called The Turing Test

 - Modern Journalism
by Mortur 9:30 PM 10/1/2006

Going over the major topics of news today, its a fairly depressing news day. A senator being investigated for sending solicitous e-mails to a senate page, murders joking it up, the Secretary of State arguing with those who want to pull him out of office, high school shootings, and a loss for the Detroit Tigers.

Not one positive thing on the front page news of Yahoo.

It makes a person think, what is the job of a modern journalist. Back in the early days of the US, it was the journalist's job to investigate a story, and pass along the truths in order to sway public opinion. This job was so important, that it has special rights protecting journalists in the Constitution - a check-and-balance for the country. But is this still the primary role of Journalists today?
